Hop Report

July 2024 (Saaz region)

1. Climatic data in July

The weather in July was characterized by a very warm and dry climate. In the second and third decade, the maximum temperatures, except for small tenths in two days, did not fall below 25 °C. Ten tropical days increased the average temperature by 1.5 °C in comparison to the long-term normal. As far as the precipitation July was deeply below average, compared to the long-term average 50% of the rainfalls are missing. The most important for cultivation was the precipitation on July 12, when 21.1 mm fell.

4. Assessment of the health condition and the vegetation

The elongating growth phase of the Saaz variety finished within the second decade of month. We consider the beginning of the growth of the fertile sprouts and flowers as good. In the second half of July the hops started to create the cones on most areas. Quantity and quality of cones will be influenced by rainfalls totals at the beginning of August and during the month. Given the development of the vegetation, we estimate the very beginning of the harvest for the Saaz hops on August 16–18, 2024. Based on the development of hops so far, we expect a slightly above average harvest. Despite the lower frequency of precipitation, the character of the weather was favourable to the development of the downy mildew of hops (Pseudoperenospora humuli Myi et Takah.). According to the recommended Hop Protection Methodology the fourth treatment against the secondary infection took place. The application of Movento 100 SC at a dose of 1.5 l / ha continued to protect hops against hop aphid (Phorodon humuli Schrank) and red spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch). The health status of the vegetation is optimal.
